Writing Update – 30/6/2013

Yup, it’s that time of the week again when I present myself, head bowed with shame, to deliver this week’s writing update, which is intended partially to reassure myself that this book is progressing but mostly so that people will stop asking me if it’s finished yet. Yes, that’s right. The emails and comments demanding to know when the Ripper Book will be out have begun. I’m a BIT unnerved by this as I’ve never had one of my books so hotly anticipated before and of course, being the bag of nerves that I am, this has had something of […]

Writing Update – 17/6/13

The women of Whitechapel arming themselves against the Ripper. Nice work ladies. Photo: The Museum of London. Yes, it’s that time of the week when I ramble on about how the Ripper Book is doing. Seriously everyone, this weekly update is probably the only thing keeping me on the straight and narrow when it comes to writing this book. This and the prospect of a celebratory weekend on the lash in Spitalfields once it’s done and dusted. Ripper Book Progress, week ending 16th June 2013: Current word count – 53,630/90,000. Body count – 4/8. Most overused word – ‘Whitechapel’. Favourite […]

Writing Update – 9/6/13

Christ Church, Spitalfields last weekend. Photo: Melanie Clegg. Ripper Book Progress, week ending 9th June 2013: Current word count – 47,473/90,000. Body count – 4/8. Most overused word – ‘guts’. Favourite line this week – ‘See no evil, hear no evil and no evil shall come to you.‘ Title – From Whitechapel. This week’s interesting research fact – Catherine Eddowes had a tattoo. (I already knew this obvs but I thought you’d all be interested.) Incidences of The F Bomb – three. Music on repeat while writing: Nine Inch Nails – Came Back Haunted. Snogs – none. But there’s one […]

From Whitechapel

Tower Bridge. I’m afraid that there’s not a proper writing update this week as it was half term here so I got absolutely nothing done thanks to a combination of fine weather and demanding children. However, it’s not been a total loss as I not only managed to come up with a title but I also went on a fantastic research trip to London yesterday. The main point of yesterday’s visit to London was to take part in something called The London Job, which basically involves a gang of Ripperologists going on an epic walk to look at obscure sites […]

Writing Update – 26/5/13

Graffiti (now removed) on Artillery Lane, Spitalfields. Photo: Melanie Clegg. Ripper Book Progress, week ending 26th May 2013: Current word count – 40,000/90,000. Body count – 4/8. Most overused word – ‘gin’. Favourite line this week – ‘Some tart got her puddings cut out on Hanbury Street last night.‘ Title – non existant. This week’s interesting research fact – There was snow in London in July 1888! Incidences of The F Bomb – three. Snogs – none. Mention of ‘eels’ – none. Victorian ambience level – RIDICULOUSLY HIGH. Use of surnames from my Facebook friends list – ten so far. […]

Writing update – The Ripper Book

The women of Whitechapel arming themselves against the Ripper. Nice work ladies. Photo: The Museum of London. I’ve been neglecting this blog a bit, haven’t I? Sorry about that. The fact of the matter is that I’ve been hard at work on my novel about the Whitechapel Murders in 1888, which is turning into a bit of an epic project with all sorts of things going on. As some of you may recall, I started working on the so called Ripper Book about eighteen months ago but then shelved it while I wrote Minette. However, it’s now my main focus […]
