Windsor Castle

When I posted the other day about my forthcoming fortieth birthday (eek!), many of you expressed astonishment that I had ‘visit Windsor Castle’ on my Things To Do Before I Turn Forty List. Which is fair enough – after all, I am a history blogger and have been resident in the UK for my entire life so far so how come I’ve never managed to visit? The thing is that I HAD actually been to Windsor Castle before. Well, sort of. I spent a lovely afternoon in the private bit of the estate, near Frogmore House, there a couple of […]

Looking forward to 2014

Christ Church, Spitalfields. Photo: Melanie Clegg. Following on from yesterday’s highlights of 2013, I thought it’d be fun or interesting or whatever to have a look at the ten things that I am most STOKED about for 2014. Ready? Thomas Cromwell, Earl of Essex, after Hans Holbein the Younger, early 17th century. Photo: National Portrait Gallery, London. 1. Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies at the RSC. It seems like eons ago that I bought my tickets for this and I can’t believe that it is now just mere weeks until I trek up to Stratford upon Avon for […]

The 2013 Top Ten

At the Cheapside Hoard exhibition preview, Museum of London. Photo: Suzy Nightingale. Wow, what a busy and action packed year it has been – full of all manner of historical treats and excitements! As is traditional at this time of year, I’ve decided to put together a list of my top ten vaguely blog related moments but it’s been REALLY hard to narrow it down as so much has happened and I’ve had such a blast! However, here is my poor effort, such as it is… Detail from a portrait of Anne of Denmark. Photo: Melanie Clegg. 1. In Fine […]

On top of the exciting announcements about next year’s exhibitions at the Queens Galleries in London and Edinburgh, the Royal Collection have just announced that the 2014 special exhibition at Buckingham Palace will be ‘Royal Childhood’, which ‘will reflect on the birth of HRH Prince George of Cambridge. Royal Childhood tells the story of life as a young member of the royal family at Buckingham Palace, and will […]

Royal Collection 2014

The Royal Collection have just announced their programme of exhibitions for 2014 and I have to say it’s a bit exciting! First of all is the brilliant news that this year’s wonderful In Fine Style: The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion will be moving to the Queen’s Gallery at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh from the 14th of March until the 20th of July. This is really excellent news as this was a truly outstanding exhibition that showcased some of the most powerful, sumptuous and gorgeous examples of sixteenth and seventeenth century royal portraiture and it really deserves […]

In Fine Style – a superb Tudor and Stuart exhibition

Photo: Melanie Clegg. I was lucky enough to be invited to the blogger’s preview yesterday morning of the new exhibition In Fine Style: The Art of Tudor and Stuart Fashion at the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace. It must surely be testament to how thoroughly excited I was about this exhibition that I did not at all begrudge getting up at 3.30am to get there for the 9am start and proof of how ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT it is that I think it was an entirely well spent effort. Photo: Melanie Clegg. ‘This exhibition explores the sumptuous costume of British monarchs and their […]
