Fashion Rules: Restyled

A trip to beautiful Kensington Palace is always a massive high point of the year for me as I love visiting it so much. It’s just such a beautiful old building and so full of fascinating history – I can’t resist it! Last week’s visit was especially amazing as it was to attend the press view of the brand new Fashion Rules display, which showcases outfits and accessories worn by the Queen and the late Princess Margaret and Princess Diana, all of whom resided within the palace at some point and have themselves become part of its immensely rich, occasionally […]

Marianne and France

One of my definite highlights from last year was finally seeing inside Windsor Castle – however, although I very much enjoyed poking around the gloriously opulent state rooms, my favourite bit was having a good old look at Queen Mary’s Dolls House, which is on permanent display in the castle and is a beautiful masterpiece of miniature art. However, rather ignored by the castle’s visitors, there are two other examples of amazing miniature art close by in the metre high persons of pretty blonde France and charming brunette Marianne, the two lovely dolls presented by the children of France to […]

Phryne Fisher Fashion

I have now run out of Miss Fisher’s Murders episodes to watch and probably have one hell of a wait to endure before the third season of Phryne Fisher’s escapades land on Netflix. Sad times. I’m consoling myself with the books, which are very entertaining but so very different to the series that they’re just making me feel even more wistful, probably because they’re missing all the things that make me love the show so much – that frisson with Jack, Aunt Prudence, the sweet romance between Dot and Hugh (it’s not quite so super sweet in the books) and […]

Alexander McQueen – Savage Beauty

Although I might not look it, I am actually pretty fashion literate, in that I take more than a passing interest in the work of various designers, even if I will probably never be able to actually own anything that they make. As you might expect though, my tastes definitely lean more towards the gothic and historically inspired and so naturally have been a huge fan of Alexander McQueen’s gloriously romantic and at the same time boundary pushing work for a long time. I even felt like, out of all the designers, he was a bit of a kindred spirit […]

La Mode à la Cour de Marie Antoinette

How beautiful is this book? I was pleased as punch when I got La mode à la Cour de Marie-Antoinette from my brother in law as a Christmas present, and also rather astounded by how big it is as it is HUGE. Which can be a bit annoying when it comes to finding it a space on my many bookcases, but any inconvenience is well worth it because the size means that the illustrations, many of which take up an entire page or even a fabulous double page spread, can be viewed in unprecedented detail due to their larger than […]
