Today’s painting by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun is her magnificent portrait of Geneviève-Sophie Le Couteulx de La Noraye, Madame Le Couteulx du Molay (1753-1801) whose husband Jacques-Jean, who was a cousin, was a wealthy banker. The couple were friends with the artist and this portrait was painted in 1788 while she was staying with them at their much loved country estate Malmaison, which they would sell to Joséphine Bonaparte in 1799.

The painting is now housed in the Musée Nissim de Camondo in Paris.
